What goes under a driveway
A driveway is mostly the part you never see. First we strip the topsoil and the old fill out of the drive lane, because the sandy stuff on top around here holds water and moves under a load. Then the dirt gets shaped so it falls away from the house, and it gets packed down in layers. Thin ones. Dump a foot of fill in and run a plate over the top and the bottom half stays loose, and the slab finds that out later.
On top of that packed dirt goes a base course, and that layer decides whether your drive stays flat. Concrete is strong when you push on it and weak when you pull it apart. It'll hold a loaded truck all day if it's sitting on something solid. It'll crack under a sedan if there's a hollow spot underneath. Even support is the whole game here. Every soft pocket we leave down there is a crack you're going to be looking at, usually inside the first year.
Forms get set to the finished height. We check the fall with a level and not with our eyes, and the steel goes up on chairs so it ends up inside the slab instead of laying in the dirt. Mesh thrown flat on the ground and walked on during the pour does nothing at all. It's decoration. How thick we pour comes down to what parks on it, because a car drive and a drive that holds a work truck with a loaded trailer aren't the same pour.

Where Tampa driveways crack
Concrete cracks. Every slab does it, because concrete shrinks while it cures and that pull has to go somewhere. The only question is where. So we cut control joints in a pattern that keeps the panels close to square, never long skinny rectangles, and we cut them early while the slab is still green. Cut them right and the crack drops down into the joint where you'll never look at it. Cut them late and the slab picks its own line, straight across the middle of your drive.
Water moves a driveway here too. A summer afternoon dumps rain in twenty minutes flat. If the grade runs that water down the edge of the slab, it carries the base out from under it a spoonful at a time. The concrete is fine. There's just nothing holding it up on that side anymore, so it drops. Walk an older Hillsborough street and you'll see it, drive after drive cracked and stepped right along the strip where the concrete meets the grass.
Roots do the same thing, slower. A big oak runs surface roots under a drive lane and lifts one panel until the joint stands proud and grabs your toe. Once that concrete is down you can't get at the root without breaking the panel out. So we look at what's growing near the lane before anything gets poured, and if a root run is going to be trouble we deal with it while the dirt is still open.
Widening a drive you already have
Plenty of what we pour gets added to something already there. A pad off the side, or a wider apron so two cars fit without a wheel in the grass. Sometimes it's a strip so the boat trailer stops living on the lawn. The catch is that you're joining fresh concrete to a slab that finished shrinking years ago and has already settled into whatever it sits on. Butt them tight without thinking about it and the seam opens up, or one side lifts and now you've got a lip.
So we form a real joint between the old and the new. We match the finished height on both sides so there's nothing to trip on or scrape a bumper on, and we make the new section carry water the same way the old one does. If your drive already sends water at the garage door, making it bigger just hands the water more surface to gather on. That's a conversation we have standing in your driveway, before a single form goes down.
Color is worth being straight about. New concrete and old concrete won't match on pour day. The old slab has years of sun and rain baked into it and the new one has none, so it comes in lighter. A broom finish run the same direction as what's already there gets it close, and the two even out as the new work weathers. Anybody promising an invisible seam the day the truck leaves is selling you something.
Tearing out a drive that failed
Some drives aren't worth saving. Panels that rock under a wheel. Cracks you can lay a finger in. Corners broken off at the apron, and a slab that settled so it now runs toward the house. Filling the top of a crack does nothing for concrete that lost what was holding it up. We break it out and haul it off. Then we finally get to see why it failed, and the answer is almost always sitting right there in the dirt once the slab is gone.
Here's the part people don't expect. Demolition is loud and it's over fast. Then comes a whole day of dirt work that looks like nothing is happening. That's the day that matters. Old fill comes out, soft pockets get dug and refilled, the washed out edge along the side gets rebuilt, and every bit of it gets packed before a form goes down. Skip that day and you just bought a brand new slab sitting on the same problem that killed the last one.
A lot of the housing around Tampa is slab on grade, block wall with stucco over it, and the drive runs right up to the garage. So on a tear out we pay close attention to where the old concrete met the house. The new work stays below the finish floor and pitches away from it. A drive poured level with the garage door is how a summer storm ends up inside your garage, and once it's poured there's no cheap fix for that.
Finishing and the first weeks
Finish isn't only about looks. We screed and float it, then run a broom across the top. The broom is there because a slick troweled drive in a place that rains most summer afternoons is a slip waiting to happen. Direction matters too. We run the broom across the drive instead of down its length, so water sheds off the sides rather than running the whole way to the bottom. Edges get tooled so they don't chip the first time a tire climbs up on one.
Curing is where a good pour gets thrown away. Concrete doesn't dry, it reacts with water, and Florida sun will pull that water out of the top long before the reaction is done. What you get is a surface layer weaker than the concrete under it. It shows up months later as dust on your shoes, or a thin skin that flakes off when somebody cranks a wheel while parked. Keeping moisture in the slab through those first days is what stops it.
Then you wait. Feet first. Cars after that, and the heavy loads wait longest. One thing worth knowing: turning a wheel while the car sits still on young concrete is the quickest way to scuff a drive you just paid for. Roll forward a foot, then turn.

Twenty years of concrete in Tampa
Depends on what parks on it. A car and a light pickup want one thickness, and a drive that holds a work truck or a loaded trailer wants more slab plus a better base under it. We ask what you actually park before we put a thickness on the estimate.
Usually, as long as the slab you've got is sound and sitting at a decent grade. We form a real joint between old and new, match the height so there's no lip, and keep water running the same way across both. If the existing drive is already broken up or draining at the house, widening it just makes that problem bigger.
Every slab shrinks as it cures, and that pull comes out as a crack somewhere. The control joints we cut are there to decide where. A hairline running down a joint line is the slab doing what we asked it to do, and a crack wandering across the middle of a panel is a different story that usually points at the base.
Feet come well before tires, and the heavy loads come last. The exact wait moves with the weather that week, so we give you the numbers for your pour before we leave the job. Driving on it early is the fastest way to crack a slab that was going to be fine.

That's a grading problem, and it gets solved before the pour by reshaping the base so the finished slab falls away from the house. Sometimes it means a step down at the garage door, or changing how the edge drains.
