Finished concrete is hard to photograph well. The parts that took the skill are the flat plane, the edges, and the joints falling where they should. When you stand on a job in person the first thing you look at is whether the surface runs true and whether the water knows where to go.

What a good finish looks like

Even broom texture with no ropey lines. Edges that are crisp instead of crumbling, joints that are straight and cut deep enough to work, color that stays consistent across the pour. A patchy slab usually means water got added to the mix on site to make it easier to place, and that costs strength.

Look at the perimeter too. Where new concrete meets a wall, a threshold or an existing slab, the joint should be clean and the level should be right. The ground around the edge should be backfilled instead of left as a trench for water to sit in.

The half you cannot see

None of these photographs show the compaction, the steel, the fall or the joint depth, and those are what decide whether the slab is still good in a decade. One customer had an inspector come out weeks after his job and confirm the concrete quality and the drainage. That's about the only time the hidden work gets seen by anybody but us.

So our estimates say what goes underneath and not only what goes on top. If you're comparing quotes, compare those lines. That's where the difference in price usually is.
